Our brief was to design a modern coastal garden with planting for back and side gardens that would be drought tolerant and suitable for extreme coastal conditions.
The clients wanted an experienced Dover Heights garden designer to create an innovative and low maintenance garden that could also accommodate their many family and friends and make it easier for outdoor entertaining.Â
We combined Australian native plants with corten-steel pots and modern “zig-zag” bench seating to achieve our contemporary coastal look.

THE CLIENTS – A Dover Heights family who want to have enough room share their new cliffside garden space with family and friends. Living in a highly exposed position on the cliffs of Dover Heights which receives fierce winds. Their garden backs onto the cliff park which is exposed to strong coastal winds, and salt water.
COASTAL LANDSCAPE PLANS
We incorporated a defined decking and seating structure to help create a new modern garden feel. We included a zig zag style retaining wall, inspired by renowned Modernist Landscape Architect Thomas Church, which doubles up as extra outdoor seating.
We incorporated Millboard (artificial timber) decking along the front and top of the wall, to extend the decking into the garden area and incorporated large Corten steel planters to add extra layering and dramatic effect.
LOW MAINTENANCE COASTAL PLANTS
We planted a range of low maintenance succulents and Australian native hardy plants, with primarily blue/grey foliage, that complement the client’s vibrant outdoor dining table.
